Scott Wormleighton Emerges Victorious at Orsett Golf Club
Leicestershire’s Scott Wormleighton emerged victorious at the English Mid-Amateur Open Stroke Play Championship after firing a final round 69 at Orsett Golf Club in Essex. The Rothley Park golfer’s impressive three-under-par total of 213 over 54 holes was enough to secure the win, beating last year’s champion David Corben by three shots.
The Prestigious Logan Trophy
First played for in 1988, the English Mid-Amateur Open, also known as the Logan Trophy, is open to amateur golfers aged 35 and over. Wormleighton’s exceptional performance in challenging wet and windy conditions set him apart from the rest of the field.
A Career-Defining Victory
Reflecting on his win, Wormleighton expressed his joy, stating that it was the biggest victory of his golfing career. He credited his success to a strong start with birdie-birdie and consistent play throughout the tournament. Despite tough weather conditions, he maintained composure and accuracy off the tee with strategic club choices.
Exciting Final Day Action
Starting two shots behind leader Joseph Deraney from America on the final day, Wormleighton got off to a dream start with an early chip-in birdie. He continued his momentum by birdying three of the first five holes. Meanwhile, Corben faced early challenges but managed to stay in contention with key birdies.
Impressive Performances Across the Board
Corben’s consistent play earned him second place with level-par rounds of 72 each. Stuart Archibald secured third place while local favorite Shaun Mills and Jason Renton delivered standout performances on their home course.
Celebrations Await
After a long drive home following his victory, Wormleighton planned to celebrate with some well-deserved beers and takeaway food. His remarkable win at Orsett Golf Club will be remembered as a defining moment in his golfing journey.
